From order to padlock

How an SSL certificate gets onto your site

An SSL certificate encrypts traffic between your visitors and your server, and proves the domain belongs to you. Issuance is quick for domain validation; organisation and wildcard certificates take a little longer.

Pick the validation level

Domain Validation suits blogs, brochure sites and most small shops. Organisation Validation adds vetted company details for businesses that want them visible. Wildcard covers every subdomain on one certificate.

Prove you control the domain

DV is confirmed by email to an address on the domain, a DNS record, or a file on the server. OV additionally checks company registration details, so allow extra time before you plan the switch to HTTPS.

Install and bind the certificate

The certificate and its intermediate chain are installed against your domain in cPanel or Plesk. Missing the intermediate chain is the single most common cause of 'not fully secure' warnings on otherwise valid certificates.

Force HTTPS and track expiry

Redirect HTTP to HTTPS, update any hard-coded internal links, and note the renewal date. We send expiry reminders, because an expired certificate produces a full-page browser warning that stops visitors dead.

SSL certificate questions we are asked most

Which validation level you need, what a wildcard actually covers, whether SSL affects SEO, and what to do when the padlock does not appear.

What is the difference between DV, OV and Wildcard SSL?

Domain Validation confirms only that you control the domain, and is issued fastest — it is what most sites need. Organisation Validation additionally verifies your registered company details, which appear in the certificate. Wildcard is about scope rather than vetting: one certificate secures the domain and every subdomain under it, so you are not buying and renewing a separate certificate for shop, blog and mail.

Short answer

DV proves the domain, OV also vets the company, Wildcard covers every subdomain.

Does a Wildcard SSL cover sub-subdomains too?

A wildcard covers one level. A certificate for *.yourbrand.com secures shop.yourbrand.com and blog.yourbrand.com, but not uk.shop.yourbrand.com — that second level needs its own wildcard or a separate certificate. Worth checking before you design a deep subdomain structure around a single certificate.

Short answer

One wildcard covers one level of subdomains, not nested sub-subdomains.

Does SSL affect SEO rankings?

Yes, though indirectly and modestly. Google confirmed HTTPS as a lightweight ranking signal in 2014. The larger effect is behavioural: browsers mark HTTP pages as 'Not secure', which costs you conversions and trust long before rankings react. Any site taking logins, payments or contact form data should be on HTTPS regardless of the SEO argument.

Short answer

HTTPS is a confirmed ranking signal, but the trust and conversion effect matters more.

Why does my padlock not show even though SSL is installed?

Almost always mixed content: the page loads over HTTPS but pulls an image, script or stylesheet over HTTP, so the browser downgrades the indicator. The other frequent cause is a missing intermediate certificate chain, which some browsers tolerate and others reject. Both are fixable without reissuing the certificate.

Short answer

Mixed content or a missing intermediate chain — not usually a faulty certificate.

What happens when an SSL certificate expires?

Browsers stop trusting it and show a full-page interstitial warning that most visitors will not click past. Email clients and API integrations pointed at the domain start failing too. There is no grace period, which is why we send reminders ahead of the renewal date rather than leaving it to your calendar.

Short answer

Expiry triggers a full-page browser warning immediately — there is no grace period.

My hosting includes free SSL — why buy a certificate?

Free AutoSSL is genuinely enough for most sites, and it ships on every HostAccent hosting plan. A paid certificate earns its place when you need wildcard coverage across many subdomains, want organisation details vetted and shown, or need the warranty and support that comes with a commercial certificate. Otherwise, free is the honest answer.

Short answer

Free AutoSSL suits most sites; pay for wildcard scope, OV vetting or a warranty.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Browse by topic or search below. Every answer is written by our engineers — no fluff.

01Do all hosting plans include a free SSL certificate?

Yes. Every HostAccent shared hosting, WordPress hosting, cloud, and VPS plan includes a free auto-renewing SSL certificate (Let's Encrypt or equivalent). SSL encrypts traffic between your visitors and your server, enables HTTPS, and is a confirmed Google ranking signal — included at no extra cost on every plan from the entry-level tier upwards.

02How quickly can an SSL certificate be activated?

Free Let's Encrypt SSL activates in minutes via cPanel's AutoSSL tool. For premium paid SSL certificates (DV, OV, or EV), domain validation typically takes minutes, organisation validation takes 1-3 business days, and EV validation takes 3-7 business days due to the extended vetting process. HostAccent's support team guides you through each step.

03Will an SSL certificate improve my SEO rankings?

Yes. Google has confirmed HTTPS (requiring a valid SSL certificate) as a ranking factor since 2014. Without SSL, Chrome and other browsers display 'Not Secure' warnings that increase bounce rates, harming both rankings and conversion rates. An SSL certificate is the minimum baseline for any serious website in 2024.

04What is the difference between DV, OV, and EV SSL certificates?

DV (Domain Validated) SSL verifies domain ownership only — issued in minutes and shown as a browser padlock. OV (Organisation Validated) SSL verifies your business identity alongside domain ownership. EV (Extended Validation) SSL undergoes the strictest vetting, showing your company name in the address bar — best for banks, financial services, and high-trust ecommerce. HostAccent offers all three types.

05What is the difference between free Let's Encrypt SSL and paid SSL?

Both encrypt your site traffic identically — there is no speed or encryption-strength difference. Free Let's Encrypt is DV-only and auto-renews every 90 days. Paid SSL certificates (DV, OV, EV) include warranties ($10,000-$1.75M), static validity periods (1-2 years), organisation validation, and extended validation options that display your company name — important for high-trust ecommerce and financial sites.
