What actually happens between paying and seeing the padlock
An SSL certificate scrambles the traffic between your visitor and your server, and proves the domain really is yours. A domain-validated certificate is usually issued within minutes; organisation and wildcard certificates need longer, so plan the switch accordingly.
Pick the validation level
Domain Validation is right for blogs, company websites and most small shops. Organisation Validation puts vetted company details inside the certificate for businesses that want them visible. Wildcard is about reach — one certificate for every subdomain you run.
Prove the domain is yours
DV is confirmed by an email to an address on the domain, a DNS record, or a file placed on the server. OV also checks your company registration papers, so leave extra days in the plan before you announce the move to HTTPS.
Install it with the full chain
The certificate and its intermediate chain go in against your domain in cPanel or Plesk. A missing intermediate chain is the single most common reason a perfectly valid certificate still shows 'not fully secure' in someone's browser.
Force HTTPS and note the date
Send HTTP to HTTPS, update any internal links that were hard-coded with http://, and write down the renewal date. We send expiry reminders too, because an expired certificate greets every visitor with a full-page warning.

DV, OV or Wildcard — which one do I need?
Domain Validation only confirms that you control the domain, and it is issued fastest — for most websites that is genuinely all you need. Organisation Validation goes further and verifies your registered company details, which then appear inside the certificate. Wildcard is a different axis altogether: it is about scope, not vetting, covering your domain plus every subdomain under it so you are not buying and renewing separate certificates for shop, blog and mail.

Will a Wildcard cover sub-subdomains as well?
Only one level down. A certificate for *.yourbrand.com secures shop.yourbrand.com and blog.yourbrand.com, but it will not cover dhaka.shop.yourbrand.com — that deeper level needs its own wildcard or its own certificate. Worth knowing before you design a nested subdomain structure around a single purchase.

Does HTTPS help my Google ranking?
Yes, but indirectly and only mildly. Google confirmed HTTPS as a lightweight ranking signal back in 2014. The bigger effect is what visitors see: browsers label HTTP pages 'Not secure', and that costs you trust and conversions long before any ranking shifts. Any site handling logins, payments or contact form data belongs on HTTPS whatever the SEO argument says.

SSL is installed, so why is there still no padlock?
Nearly always mixed content — the page itself arrives over HTTPS but pulls an image, a script or a stylesheet over plain HTTP, so the browser downgrades the indicator. The other regular culprit is a missing intermediate certificate chain, which some browsers quietly tolerate and others reject outright. Both are fixable without reissuing anything.

What happens the day my certificate expires?
Browsers stop trusting it instantly and throw up a full-page warning that almost nobody clicks past. Email clients and any API integration pointed at the domain start failing at the same time.
